Amazon Entering Health Care

As you may be aware, if you have ever dealt with a specialty pharmacy it is a confusing process – And it is confusing for all parties involved. First, you may call your insurance company when you find out you need a medication that is available only through a speciality pharmacy, such as hyaluronic acid (Euflexxa, Synvisc, Orthovisc, etc) They tell you that you are covered and to call Expess Scripts. You then call Express Scripts, get patched through to multiple different departments only to find out that you actually need to be speaking to Accredo. My office deals with this on a daily basis in an effort to obtain hyaluronic acid injections for our patients. This process can take hours and cause frustration on everyone’s part and often the consumer doesn’t find out what their co-pay is until the very end, and it can vary from free to over a thousand dollars. When I read this article in Forbes, I became a little hopeful Amazon has made my life so much easier and in many ways more economical. I no longer pay sky high prices for medicines like Advil at a Manhattan pharmacy since I can get it in 2 days with Amazon. If Amazon could streamline and simplify the process for obtaining prescription drugs I am optimistic that it would not only be cheaper, but it would save us all a lot of time.
